Course objectives
The main aims of the course are:
1. Acquire basic theoretical knowledge on psychiatry, organisation of psychiatric care, psychiatric diagnostics and therapy, including adverse effects of psychiatric therapy, and neurostimulation methods.
2. Acquire basic knowledge on major psychiatric disorders, their symptoms, course, diagnostics and treatment.
3. Acquire knowledge on psychiatric symptoms which may necessitate intensive care: delirium and disorientation, agitation and aggressiveness, catatonia and stupor, suicidality and self-harm, refusal of food and fluids, somatic comorbidities of psychiatric disorders.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Describe characteristics of psychiatry.
2. Describe methodology of diagnostics and therapy in psychiatry including possible adverse effects necessitating intensive care - neuroleptic malignant syndrome and serotonin syndrome.
3. Prepare plan of nursing care for patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy.
4. Describe major groups of psychiatric disorders, their symptoms and possible connection to intensive care.
5. Prepare plan of nursing care for patients with delirium, disorientation and psychiatric patients with somatic comorbidity.
6. Prepare plan of nursing care for agitated, aggressive and suicidal patients.
7. Prepare plan of nursing care in patients with catatonia, stupor and patients refusing food and fluids.
Syllabus
  • Introduction, the role of intensive care in psychiatry and psychiatric symptoms in intensive care of other medical specialities, the overview of possible situations necessitating intensive care in psychiatry. Introduction to psychopathology.
  • 2. Diagnostics and therapy in psychiatry. Adverse effects of psychiatric medication leading to a necessity of intensive care (neuroleptic malignant syndrome, serotonin syndrome), electroconvulsive therapy.
  • 3. International classification of diseases - overview of major psychiatric diagnoses and their relationship to intensive care.
  • 4. Delirious and disoriented patient. Intoxicated patient - suicidal attempts, psychoactive substances intoxications.
  • 5. Catatonic and stuporous patient. Patient refusing food and fluids.
  • 6. Agitated and aggressive patient. Suicidal and self-harming patient.
