Course objectives
The aim of the course is to look at obesity not only as a consequence of undesirable nutrition, but as a disease that activates other diseases. population and various subpopulations, further emphasize comprehensive approaches in prevention, cooperation with family and educational institutions and interdisciplinary cooperation in the treatment of obesity in children and adults.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course, the student will be able to: 1) identify basic factors associated with development of obesity 2) explain general as well as specific pathogenic pathways associated with obesity development, including exposome theory 3) explain the relationship between obesity and its comorbidities 4) explain the relationship between obesity and major life phases and life transitions and socioeconomic status 5) critically evaluate effectiveness of individual types of therapeutic intervention in obese subjects At the end of the course, students will be able to practically apply knowledge in the process of nutritional care for an obese adult or child patient.

  • 1) Definition of terms, history of obesity, epidemiology, causes and health risks of obesity 2) Basic pathophysiology of obesity 3) Prevention of obesity 4) Genetic factors and obesity, methods of genetic examination in obese 5) Health risks from obesity 6) Adipose tissue, types, functions, hormones regulating food intake 7) Macronutrients and micronutrients in nutrition of obese people 8) Obesity and fluid intake, choice of drinks 9) Sleep and obesity 10) Childhood obesity 11) Basic indicators for the evaluation of obesity - ways of assessing nutritional status, overview of individual examinations 12) Methods of measuring body composition 13) Psychological care, cognitive-behavioral approach, communication. 14) The role of diet in the treatment of obesity - types of reducing diets 15) Methods of population monitoring of obesity 16) Pharmacotherapy of obesity 17) Surgical treatment of obesity 18) Endocrine disruptors
