Course objectives
The aim of the internship is to gain an overview of the tasks involved in the process of patient irradiation, which includes knowledge of the basic functions of the instrumentation, determination of dosimetric characteristics of the radiation beam, as well as planning external radiotherapy and brachytherapy. Upon completion of the internship, the student should be prepared practically to perform the activities of a radiological physicist in a radiotherapy department.
Learning outcomes
The graduate of practical training will: - know the basics of dosimetry and radiotherapy planning in clinical practice.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basics of linear accelerator control, therapeutic X-ray and brachytherapy irradiator (including demonstration of accessories), simulator, importance of verification system 2. Determination of basic dosimetric characteristics of photon beams - absorbed dose, beam profiles, PDD, TPR, OF, WF 3. Determination of basic dosimetric characteristics of electron beams - beam quality (R50), determination of reference depth, absorbed dose, beam profiles, PDD, OF 4. External beam radiotherapy planning - basic planning techniques - conformal RT, IMRT, IMAT 5. Verification of dosimetry plans, in vivo dosimetry 6. IGRT (image-guided radiotherapy), gating - meaning, use 7. linear accelerator QA - selected tests from ZPS, ZDS 8. Brachytherapy planning - interstitial, intracavitary and superficial applications 9. QA of brachytherapy irradiator, measurement of kerma yield 10. Determination of basic dosimetric characteristics of therapeutic X-ray beams - measurement of dose (low and medium energy), half-depth, OF
