Course objectives
Hygiene and epidemiology are the biomedical foundations of primary disease prevention.
Importance in teaching lies in the awareness and understanding of the complex connections between the effects of the environment and the working environment and the possible emergence of diseases in the individual and in the population.
Knowledge then provides a basis for responsible and qualified decisions with all economic and legal consequences.
Aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic principles of hygiene and epidemiology, determinants of health, risk factors of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students: - understand the principles of hygiene and epidemiology,
- know in detail the main health determinants,
-know the risk factors of diseases and its quantitative participation on the etiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases,
- in terms of infectious epidemiology know the basic principles of the spread of diseases and methods of implementation of anti epidemic measures,
- know epidemiological characteristics of selected groups of infections,
- know current epidemiological situation in the Czech Republic and in the world.
Syllabus
  • Fundamentals and principles of infectious epidemiology:
  • Process of spread of the disease, the source, the transmission path, termilogy.
  • Epidemiology of respiratory infections.
  • Epidemiology of intestinal infections.
  • Epidemiology of hepatitis, AIDS/HIV a STD.
  • Fundamentals and principles of non-infectious epidemiology:
  • The main determinants of health, the main causes of non-infectious diseases. Health determinants
  • Risk factors of the cardiovascular diseases, of the malignant neoplasms, of obesity and other metabolic disorders
  • Physical factors in environment and occupations (microclimate, Noise, vibration, lighting, ionising and non-ionising radiation).
  • Fundamentals of the environmental toxicology.
  • Basic health promotion programmes.
