Course objectives
Public health (VZ) is based on the assumption that healthcare and health is not only an essential individual interest and need but also a significant public priority, public well being and universal human value. The aim of the course is continue from lectures and to acquaint students with the fact that the health care system is a complex system whose proper function is necessary knowledge of management, economics, law and legislation, information on many other areas. Students learn to use both the results of social medicine and other related disciplines (hygiene, epidemiology, preventive medicine, health education and health promotion, sociology, psychology, philosophy, history, etc.), as well as methods and knowledge of management, law , legislation, medical informatics, health economics and social psychology.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course student should be able to:
- describe the term Public Health, describe theoretical framework and practice of Public Health;
- identify managerial and policy issues and techniques for decision-making in health care;
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a diverse range of global and national health policies, including current and emerging trends and also of disciplines relevant to the study of health policy, planning and financing (epidemiology, health economic and other social sciences);

  • PUBLIC HEALTH:
  • 1. Information on the course Public Health. Introduction to public health as a subject for teaching, research and healthcare practice area.
  • 2. Methods and research capabilities in the field of public health.
  • 3. Ethical issues in public health and their possible solutions.
  • 4. Causes of increasing health care spending.
  • 5. Transformation of health.
  • 6. Transit demography, epidemiological transformation and health needs.
  • 7. Information base for the description and evaluation of public health.
  • 8. Medical informatics and its application.
  • 9. Health economics. The concept, theoretical background, main areas of interest (subjects), health economics
  • 10. The market and health care.
  • 11. Types of health systems in the world, their strengths and weaknesses. International comparisons, strengths and weaknesses.
  • 12. Healthcare management, its development, benefits and pitfalls. Economic tools for managing healthcare systems.
  • 13. Benefits and risks of economic analysis, waste in health care.
  • 14. Medical insurance (public health insurance, private health insurance).
  • 15. Healthcare financing (sources of finance, structure of cash expenditure on health care reimbursement forms).
  • 16. Effectiveness and efficiency, explanation of terms, their measurement and evaluation.
  • 17. Accessibility of health care services.
  • 18. The quality of health care, definitions, characteristics, possibilities for evaluation.
  • 19. Evaluation of health care services (importance and evaluation methods, used indicators and their interpretation).
  • 20. Medical needs (the needs, requirements and consumption of services).
  • 21. Management theory and management of medical facilities.
  • 22. Prevention and its obstacles (motivation to prevent, categorization prevention, prevention of barriers).
