Course objectives
The course objective is to develop students' receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) English language skills and to enhance their knowledge of selected grammar chapters at level B2. The course also seeks to develop in students knowledge of specialized discipline-specific vocabulary, academic presentation and writing skills as well as skills for effective doctor-patient, doctor-doctor and doctor-nursing staff communication.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to describe and explain terms related to body systems (namely urinary, endocrine, reproductive, nervous, and sensory systems), their organs, functions and disorders; use practical medical vocabulary; apply medical language in doctor-patient, doctor-doctor, and doctor-nursing staff communication, interpret medical texts, present and discuss specialized topics, write cover letters; use grammatical structures typical for medical and academic language.

  • 1. week: Introduction, e-learning, requirements, assessment, revision, cover letter.
  • 2. week: Presentations and Public Speaking in English, Language of Presentations I.
  • 3. week: Presentations and Public Speaking in English, Language of Presentations II.
  • 4. week: Urinary and Reproductive Systems - Anatomy. Student Presentations.
  • 5. week: Urinary and Reproductive Systems - Pathological Conditions. Student Presentations.
  • 6. week: Endocrine System - Anatomy. Student Presentations.
  • 7. week: Endocrine System - Pathological Conditions. Student Presentations.
  • 8. week: MIDTERM TEST
  • 9. week: Nervous System - Anatomy. Student Presentations.
  • 10. week: Nervous System - Pathological Conditions. Student Presentations.
  • 11. week: Sensory System: Eye - Anatomy and Pathological Conditions. Student Presentations.

  • Grammar taught in the course: conditional clauses, direct and indirect speech, modal verbs with present and past infinitives.
  • In addition to the above mentioned topics and grammar, the course will also focus on the mastery of communicative skills - i.e. speaking, listening, reading, and writing - on the B2 level of the European Reference Framework.

Assessment methods
The above mentioned topics will be consolidated using all the study skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Supplementary materials used in the seminars (hard copies, electronic documents etc.) will be provided by the lecturer. The course takes the form of seminars. Attendance is compulsory. Two absences are tolerated provided a letter of excuse is handed in at the Office of Studies. Assessment is based on the results of the final examination (testing the knowledge from the autumn and spring semesters) and attendance. The examination consists of two parts, written and oral. The prerequisite for the written part is a presentation on a medical topic during the semester. The prerequisite of the oral part is to reach a minimum score of 60 per cent in the written part of the examination.

Information on completion of the course: Studenti se státní jazykovou zkouškou, příp. jejím ekvivalentem na úrovni B2 ERR (TOEFL, FCE apod.) mohou vykonat zkoušku v rámci hromadného předtermínu konaného během semestru.
