Course objectives

At the end of the course student should be able to understand integration in the field of biomedical sciences such as chemistry, physiology, molecular biology, pathology and pathological physiology clarifying mechanisms of xenobiotic (including drugs) effects and under which conditions they and their combinations may elicit therapeutic, adverse, and toxic effects, and what is the relation to the dose given, administration route, status of the organism (differences in pediatrics and geriatrics). They will be familiar with the requirements of "Good Clinical Practice" for development of new drugs, and duties of physicians in cooperation with the pharmaceutical industry and principles of pharmacovigilance.

LECTURES
Spring semester 2023
1^st lecture
Introduction to the study of pharmacology. Definition of pharmacology, basic terminology, subspecializations, drug names. The active medicinal substance, medicinal product - pharmacon - drug. Drug life cycle.
2^nd lecture
Mechanisms of drug action, non-specific and specific. Receptor and binding sites subtypes - their subclassification. Functions of autoreceptors and heteroreceptors.
3^rd lecture
Basic principles of Pharmacokinetics. Fate of the drug in the body. Absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion. Changes of drug effects after their repeated administration.
4^th lecture
Drug interactions at different levels. Classification of drug interactions and assessment of their seriousness. Inhibition and induction of enzymes by drugs.
5^th lecture
Factors influencing the drug effect, their classification and clinical significance. The influence of concomitant diseases on drug effect.
6^th lecture
Adverse effects of drugs. Different types of drug adverse effects classification. Evaluation of their severity. Polypragmasy, rational and effective pharmacotherapy.
7^th lecture
Pharmacotherapy in elderly. Specifics of pharmacology in geriatrics. Potentially inappropriate drugs in old age.
8^th lecture
General principles of poisoning management. Specific drug antidotes in poisoning therapy and mechanisms of their action.
