Course objectives
Main objectives of histology course are as follows: to facilitate medical students verifying of theoretical knowledge obtained during lectures on histological sections and electron micrographs of human tissues and organs; to introduce and explain principles of microscopic identification of tissues and organs; to learn students in correct using of a light microscope and interpretation of observed microscopic entities and findings. In histology course II medical students continue in study of microscopic structure and development of organ systems as follows: digestive (except the oral cavity, its content and its surrounding), urinary, reproductive, nervous, endocrine, sense organs and integumentary. One practice (usually No.8) is directed on the embryological topic of great importance in the praxis, e.g. development of placenta and umbilical cord, development of external form of the conceptus, parturition; marks of the full-term fetus.
Syllabus
  • 1. Microscopic structure of the digestive system I, II, and III.Slides: Oesophagus, Cardia, Fundus ventriculi, Pylorus,Duodenum, Intestinum tenue, Intestinum crassum. Appendix, Anus, Hepar - 2x, Vesica fellea, Pancreas and Islets of Langerhans.
  • Repetition I: Respiratory system and digestive system.
  • 2. Microscopic structure of the urinary system. Slides: Ren, Ureter, Vesica urinalis, Urethra feminina, Pars cavernosa urethrae masculinae.
  • 3. Microscopic structure of the male reproductive system. Slides: Testis, Epididymis, Glandula vesiculosa, Prostata, and Penis. Microscopic structure of the female reproductive system. Placenta and umbilical cord. Slides: Ovary - 2x, Corpus luteum, Tuba uterina - ampulla, Tuba uterina – isthmus, Uterus - prolipherative and secretory phases,Vagina, Placenta, and Funiculus umbilicalis.
  • 4. Embryology: Development of external form of the conceptus. Parturition. Marks of the full-term fetus.
  • Repetition II: Urinary system, male and female reproductive systems.
  • 5. Microscopic structure of endocrine glands. Slides: Hypophysis cerebri, Epiphysis, Glandula thyreoidea, Glandula parathyreoidea, Glandula suprarenalis, Islets of Langerhans.

Assessment methods
Attending on practicals is obligatory. Knowledge of microscopic structure of organs is checked with short oral examination (or writing test) and by practical microscopy. The knoledge level is classified with points: 100 points = A, 60 points = C, 25 points = E, 0 points = F. Precondition of the credit obtaining is to achieve 180 points.
