Course objectives
Main objectives of otorhinolaryngologic course are to give information about applied anatomy and physiology of head and neck and to teach students basic principles of diagnosis and treatment of head and neck diseases.
Syllabus
  • 1st day (Monday, FNUSA) Introduction, study literature, organization of practical courses. The hearing and balance system, applied anatomy and physiology,methods of investigation, inspection, palpation, otoscopy - practical training. The basic pathological finding on the ear drum I. - slides, demonstrations of patients. Video - function of hearing system, OAE. Radiography of the temporal bone (Schueller´s view, Stenvers´ view, CT). Practical training of ENT investigation – otoscopy, microotoscopy. 2nd day (Tuesday, FNUSA) Surgical treatment of acute and chronic Otitis Media, reconstructiv surgery. Practic course and operating theatre. Stapedectomy - video. Video: FESS. Slides: Ear II,Nose and paranasal sinuses, applied anatomy and physiology, external inspection and palpation, anterior rhinoscopy - practical course, radiology of the sinuses, classical radical treatment and functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) - videodemonstration. Patologic findings - slides. 3rd day FDN 4th day FDN 5th day (Friday, FNUSA) Nasopharynx and oropharynx - applied anatomy and physiology, posterior rhinoscopy - practical training, investigation of the oral cavity and salivary glands, Waldayer´s lymphoepithelial ring, functional assessment of the Eustachian tube. Patologic findings - slides. The correction of saddle nose – videodemonstration. Hypopharynx and Larynx - applied anatomy and physiology, methods of investigation - indirect laryngoscopy and hypopharyngoscopy - practical training, functional disorders of the larynx. Dyspnoe, tracheotomy - film. Diseases of Thyroid gland. 6th day (Monday, FNUSA) Cervical lymphatic system - applied anatomy and physiology, methods of investigation - practical training. Differential diagnosis of tumors of neck. Head and neck cancer - strategy of treatment. Video - Prof. Dr. O. Kleinsasser : Restoration of the voce by endolaryngeal surgery. Endoscopy (Microlaryngoscopy and bronchoscopy) - in Otolaryngology, demonstration of endoscopic instrumentarium. Kleinsasser: Restoration of the voice by endolaryngeal surgery. N:S.Jones: Paediatric Microlaryngoscopy and bronchoscopy (14min) 7th day FDN 8th day (Wednesday, FNUSA) Emergency and first aid procedures : bleeding, dyspnoe, foreign bodies, corrosions, sudden hearing loss, acute vertigo. Film: tracheotomy. Round table discussion

Teaching methods
practical training of clinical examinating methods and colloquium
Assessment methods
Attendance in practices and seminars is compulsory; the presence of students is recorded. Teaching methods: lectures, discussion, practical training in ENT evaluation, presentation of individual cases – videos, pictures, watching surgery in operating theatre. Final appreciation- student will prove his ability to provide ENT examination and recognize normal ENT finding.
