Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with the basics of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in the most typical microbial diseases. This basic knowledge will then be broadened in clinical subjects (especially Infectology).
Those interested in deeper knowledge in antibiotic problematic and clinical microbiology may later register to the subject VSAT081 (Basics of antimicrobial therapy)
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student
* defines microbial findings in different localisations
* defines the difference between common microbial flora, temporary findings, contaminants and pathogens in various localisations
* records infections that are rare and the rather common ones
* defines basics of diagnostic and therapeutic approach in the most typical microbial disease; here, the basis is only supposed, more enlargement is supposed in other subjects, namely Infectology

Namely student defines normal flora (if it does exist)/transitory findings/contaminants/pathogens in
* individual parts of upper and lower respiratory ways, lungs and middle ear
* different parts of gastrointestinal tract, livers, bile bladder and pancreas
* individual parts of uropoetic system
* individual parts of the reproductive system
* individual parts of central and peripheral neural system
* bloodstream, bones, muscles and different tissues
* skin, eyes, external ear

The student also describes specific problems of microbial infections
* during pregnancy and delivery and during the first days after delivery
* in hospitalized, especially immunocompromised persons (healthcare-associated infections)
The student also composes the basic facts in
* problematics of biofilm detection (including testing of effectivity of antibiotics to biofilm)
* basic process of clinical microbiology (indication, sampling, material transport, specimen processing, result releasing, result interpretation)

  • Topic 1: Introduction to Clinical Microbiology.
  • Topic 2: Bloodstream Infections. (Staphylococci)
  • Topic 3: Upper respiratory tract infections (Streptococci)
  • Topic 4: Superficial wound and skin infections, burns (Grampositive rods)
  • Topic 5: Urinary tract infections (Enterobacteriaceae I)
  • Topic 6: GIT infections (Enterobacteriaceae II, campylobacter, helicobacter, diarrhea viruses)
  • Topic 7: Healthcare-associated infections (Pseudomonads and other GNFB)
  • Topic 8: Purulent meningitis (pathogenic Neisseria, invasive Haemophilus)
  • Topic 9: Deep wound, tissue and organ infections (anaerobic and some non-culturable bacteria)
  • Topic 10: Culturable DCD infections (mycobacteria, actinomycetes, nocardia, legionella, bordetella)
  • Topic 11: Aseptic meningitis and meningoencephalitis (borrelia, neuroviruses)
  • Topic 12: Sexually transmitted diseases (Treponema, Chlamydia trachomatis)
  • Topic 13: Review I (overview of diagnostics of bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses)
  • Topic 14: Review II (optional, preparation for the practical exam)
