Course objectives
The subject Palliative care will provide in the form of pre-graduate practice a clinical experience of complex palliative care for a patient with advanced life-threatening illness (e.g. cancer, end-stage chronic renal failure, neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, multiple sclerosis and dementia syndrome). The practice will be implemented in specialized palliative care facilities: inpatient hospice, mobile/home hospice and ambulance of palliative medicine.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to:
• communicate effectively about the needs and goals of care at the end of life, with the patient and his family
• mitigate the physical and psychological symptoms of advanced disease: e.g. pain, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, depression, delirium
• schedule organizational providing of palliative care using other services (cooperation with a social worker, psychologist, clergyman, bed and home hospice)
Syllabus
  • • Basic principles of palliative care in clinical practice
  • • Clinical and ethical dilemmas in the care of end-of-life patients and their solutions
  • • Legal aspects of patient care at the end of life
  • • End-of-life communication with the patient (principles of supportive communication, reporting of adverse messages, serious diagnosis and prognosis discussions, planning of care)
  • • Palliative management of the most common symptoms of advanced disease: pain, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, depression, delirium
  • • Principles of multidisciplinary teamwork in palliative care
  • • Organization of palliative care in the Czech Republic
