Cíle předmětu
Main aims of the course are:

- to get acquainted with the problematics of general and special Psychiatry and its connections to other specialisations;
- to familiarise with psychiatric terminology;
- to get acquainted with the methodology of psychiatric diagnostics and therapeutic approaches;
- to get acquainted with characteristics, symptoms, diagnostics, course and therapy of major mental disorders;
- to familiarise with the basic diagnostic and therapeutic process in patients with psychiatric symptomatology in general medical practice.
Výstupy z učení
After completing the course a student will be able to:

- Describe and classify basic disorders of mental functions;
- Perform an examination of a patient with a psychiatric disorder;
- Describe principles of the psychiatric diagnostics;
- Describe a classification and indications of biological therapeutic methods and psychotherapy;
- Describe a classification, symptoms and course of main psychiatric disorders;
- Describe management and treatment options in main psychiatric disorders;
- Perform a necessary differential diagnosis and suggest a means to manage a patient showing symptoms of a mental disorder;
- Reproduce and apply legislation pertaining to psychiatric patients, especially hospitalisation without informed consent, possession of a driving license and gun license, criminal responsibility and legal capacity.

Instructions for the course completion in full-time study:
To complete the course, a student has to attend the lessons, only one full day of excused absence is allowed. In case of more absences, substitution is required. Substitution is usually in the form of the written essay on a selected topic or short stay at one of the wards of Department of Psychiatry. The means of substitution can be arranged with the deputy for education. The part of the final evaluation is a written credit test. The test is multiple-choice answer test with only one correct answer. To succeed in the test at least 8 out of 13 questions have to be answered correctly.

COURSE OUTLINE

The course is organised into following segments:

1. THEORETICAL SEMINARS

Are theoretical presentation about psychiatric topics. Together with a literature study and lectures should offer students a theoretical background necessary for the case studies. Seminars take place in the Lecture room of the Department of Psychiatry.
2. DEMONSTRATION OF PATIENTS AND DISCUSSIONS ABOUT SPECIFIC PATIENT CASES

This segment includes either interview with a patient, led by the lecturer, videos or interactive case studies. It is the first step in applying the theoretical knowledge about differential diagnostics and case management in Psychiatry. An active approach of students is expected as well as sufficient theoretical knowledge about the topic. Demonstrations take place in the Lecture room of the Department of Psychiatry.
3. PRACTICAL EXERCISES

This part is more practice-oriented. The exact content of each class is dependent on the current situation on specific wards of the department. It may include ward visit, demonstration of electroconvulsive therapy or bright light therapy, interviews with patient

ORGANISATION OF CLASSES

The duration of this course is two weeks. Classes begin at 8 am (7:30 on Friday) in the lecture room of the Department of Psychiatry, University Hospital Brno, building G, 1st floor. Each day, before the classes start, the students will gather in front of the lecture room and will await the secretary of the department who will open the room.

Students shall bring white coats and indoor shoes. They are allowed to store their belongings in back portions of the lecture room through the duration of the classes.

The exact organisation of the day will be communicated to students during the classes and will depend on the situation at wards of the Department and on the lecturer.

At the end of each day, the key of the lecture room should be returned to the secretary of the department and in case of her absence to the ward 21.

Students are expected to arrive prepared, it means that they will have at least a basic knowledge of the day's topic. It is possible that unprepared students will not allow presence during the classes which equal to absence for that specific day.

During the state holidays, classes are cancelled and do not to be substituted.

Předmět je dovoleno ukončit i mimo zkouškové období.
