Cíle předmětu
Seminars are complementary to the Biochemistry lecture (aZLBC041p). The knowledge of intermediary metabolism, characteristic features of metabolism of individual organs and tissues and metabolism at various conditions of the organism (well-fed state, fasting, starvation, metabolic stress, obesity, metabolic syndrome)are thoroughly practiced during Biochemistry seminars.
Výstupy z učení
The student is able to:
- explain the interrelationship between the metabolism of nutrients under different states of the organism.
- describe the metabolic characteristics of major organs and tissues and major disorders, discusses their association with diseases.
- understand and discuss principles of maintaining homeostasis and acid-base balance in the organism, including modeling situations
- discuss the composition of body fluids and their disorders in connection with the principles of homeostasis.
- explain the principles of metabolism regulation at all levels.
Osnova
  • Biochemical tests in clinical medicine and their significance. Biological material handling. Blood collection, plasma, serum. Laboratory tests in clinical biochemistry. Sources of error, assessing the significance of a test result. Enzyme assays in clinical diagnostics. Plasma lipoproteins, interconversion of lipoproteins. Cholesterol transport, balance of cholesterol intake and excretion. Blood glucose (sources, consumption, regulation). Diabetes mellitus. Catabolism of proteins and of amino acid nitrogen. Proteins in nutrition. Absorption of amino acids, utilization of amino acids in tissues, blood transport of fixed ammonia, the glutamine cycle. Nitrogenous compounds excreted into the urine. Protein intake and nitrogen balance. Integration of metabolism of nutrients: relationships among the major metabolic pathways in the fed state, postabsorptive state, and prolonged starvation. The liver functions – the role in metabolism of nutrients, hormones, and vitamins. Catabolism of haemoglobin, urobilinoids, the types of hyperbilirubinaemia. Biotransformation of xenobiotics. Neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. Water and mineral metabolism. Electrolyte composition of blood plasma, buffer bases. Respiration – transport of oxygen and CO2. The role of the kidney and the liver in acid-base balance. Blood acid-base parameters, the values indicating a particular type of disturbance. Major functions of the kidney. Glomerular filtration. Tubular resorption and secretion. Metabolism of Ca, P and F. Composition and metabolism of bones and teeth. Saliva and biochemical aspects of oral homeostasis. Plaque formation and metabolism. Informace učitele
Teaching in seminars will be realized in a contactless form, as online meetings in MS Teams environment, similarly as in the Autumn semester. The seminars will take place on the dates and times specified in the schedule. Online seminars will be teacher-moderated discussions to the given topic according to the syllabus of the course. The control questions of the given seminar topic intended for self-study and preparation for the discussion will be saved in the Study materials of the course. Attendance at online classes is mandatory, absences must be excused in IS MUNI. Maximally one unexcused absence per semester is tolerated. Like in previous semester, the up-load of a completed protocol to IS Homework Vault before the seminar date will be required. The deadline for submission is always the Wednesday 24:00 for the seminar in the given week. Protocols must be provided for all seminar topics, even in case of absence from the seminar. In the 4th, 8th and 13th week, always in the last part of the seminar continuous revision online tests will be opened in the IS MUNI at the same time for all students. These tests must be taken by all students. If students obtain at least 52/75 points from three continuous tests, they are awarded a credit without the obligation to write a credit test. (Excused absence from continuous tests can be made up in the credit week). The other students must take a credit test in the 15th week. The credit test covers the topics of all seminars and has 30 questions. The condition for giving the credit is to obtain 14 points. The credit test can be written after all absences are made up. Students who do not meet the conditions of the credit test in the credit week have the opportunity to repeat it once.
