fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
Seminars are complementary to Medical chemistry lecture. The knowledge of general, inorganic, and (bio)organic chemistry, required in the end of semester, is thoroughly practiced during Medical chemistry seminars.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able
- to understand basics of general, inorganic and organic chemistry to the extent necessary for the further study of biochemistry.
- to apply general physicochemical laws to processes in living organisms.
- to describe the chemical properties of the most important biogenic elements and essential compounds of importance in medicine, nutrition and toxicology.
- to describe and discuss the properties and reactions of organic and bioorganic compounds important for the understanding of biochemical processes.
Syllabus
  • Mole and molar quantities; basic chemical calculations.
  • Test No. 1 (10 Q, Basic chemical calculations). Solutions of electrolytes, osmotic pressure, osmolality.
  • Acid-base reactions, pH, buffers, calculations.
  • Non-covalent interactions. Surfactants.
  • Test No. 2 (12 Q, Electrolytes, calculations of pH, hydrolysis of salts, buffers, osmotic pressure, intermolecular forces, and surfactants). Reaction kinetics, the law of chemical equilibrium.
  • Redox reactions.
  • Organic compounds I.
  • Organic compounds II. Latin nomenclature.
  • Test No. 3 (18 Q, organic compounds, nomenclature, structures, reactions, Latin names) Biochemically important heterocyclic compounds and their derivatives.
  • Chemistry of saccharides.
  • Test No. 4 (12 Q, Heterocycles, saccharides). Chemistry of lipids and steroids.
  • Properties of amino acids. Proteins – secondary and tertiary structures.
  • Credit test from all seminars (30 Q).
Literature
    required literature
  • Seminar texts available in IS.
  • Dostál J. (Ed.): Essentials of Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry http://portal.med.muni.cz/article-623-essentials-of-medical-chemistry-and-biochemistry.html
Teaching methods
Discussions of the problems in the seminar text.
Assessment methods
Conditions for giving the course-unit credit First condition is full attendance in all lessons (or making up all missing and justified lessons). Short revision tests are written during the semester. Students that will obtain the specified semestral limit are not obliged to write the credit test. The other students will write the credit test with the 30 questions in the last week of the semester. The limit for passing the credit test is 14 points. Students that will not fulfill this limit will be allowed to repeat the test once. Remedial dates for writing the credit test will be scheduled. Students that will not fulfill this requirement will not be given the course-unit credit. Obtaining of course-unit credits of practices and seminars is the pre-requisite for registration to the examination of Medical chemistry and for enrollment of Biochemistry in the Spring semester.
