Course objectives
Course description: Methods of research and documentation of fortified settlements, overview of the emergence of walled and fortified settlements, redoubts and oppida in Central Europe, specifically in Moravia. Differences in the development of the construction of fortified elements, reasons for the building and importance of redoubts and information about new research.
Syllabus
  • l. Introduction to the study of primeval and proto-historic fortifications. Specification of the topic; history and the current status of cognition; methods in use. Overview of listing works and methods of documentation. 2. Fortifications in the Neolithic and Eneolithic. Enclosed Neolithic settlements, Neolithic circular enclosures (rondels), Neolithic upland settlements, Eneolithic hillforts. 3. Fortifications in the Bronze Age. Upland settlements of the Únětice culture, fortified habitats of the Early Bronze Age, circular fortified enclosures, fortified habitats of the Middle Bronze Age, hillforts of the Early and Late Bronze Age. 4. Fortifications of the Hallstatt period. Enclosed habitats, hillforts. 5. Fortifications of the La Tène period. Early La Tène fortified settlements; quadrangular fortified enclosures; Púchov culture hillforts. 6. Celtic oppida. 7. Roman camps; field marching camps; upland settlements of the Late Roman Era. 8. The role of fortifications in the settlement structure, their importance and development in the course of primeval and proto-historic settlement. Recapitulation of the topic. 9.-l2. Whole day field trip to selected typical fortifications in Moravia. l3.-l5. Practical contribution to archaeological - geodetic documentation of selected primeval hillforts.
