Course objectives
The goal of this course is to extend the knowledge of Central European Iron Age, especially with regard to mutual influence of Mediterranean and Central European archaeological cultures. Focus will be laid on the analysis of written sources (Greek – Latin) concerning the Transalpine area, presentation of imported goods and categories and primarily on the analysis of complex cultural phenomena, which were traditionally explained as a result of mutual contact between the above two zones (emergence of „princely society“ during the Hallstatt Period, La Tène art; oppida etc.)
Learning outcomes
The student should be able to define and analyse the relations between the Mediterranean in Classical Antiquity and the area of Hallstatt and La Tène cultures.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction – archaeology in Mediterranean and Transalpine area; contacts, influences, imports – both material and immaterial.
  • 2. The origins of the Iron Age and Europe during the Hallstatt Period – Massilia, Hallstatt, Sopron.
  • 3. Late Hallstatt Period – princely graves and residences: Hochdorf, Heuneburg, Vix.
  • 4. Late Hallstatt Period – Alps, Situla art.
  • 5. Early La Tène Period: Po valley and Etruscans; Golasecca and Early La Tène Europe; Early La Tène art.
  • 6. Middle La Tène Period – Celtic invasions of Italy and the Balkans, Celtic mercenaries.
  • 7. Middle La Tène Period – Middle La Tène society, La Tène art.
  • 8. Celts in northern Italy and in Asia Minor.
  • 9. Late La Tène Period: transformation of the La Tène society, coins, glass and agglomerations.
  • 10. Late La Tène Period: oppida, Viereckschanze – imports and influences; Late La Tène art.
  • 11. Collapse of oppida; Ariovist, Caesar, Burebista. The origins of Roman presence in transalpine Europe.
