Course objectives
In the course „The Bone and Antler production from Palaeolithic to the Early Middle Ages“ students will be familiarised with the development, production and use of items, which have been produced from bone, antler or horn (hereinafter referred to as KPI).
The first lessons will be focused on research concerning KPI. Students will learn about the material - about its biological and mechanical properties, about structure of bone, antler and horn; how were the artefacts made, which tools and conditions are necessary for the production of these items.
Subsequent lessons will be filled with information about KPI in individual archaeological cultures in the chronological order from the Palaeolithic period to the early Middle Ages.
Learning outcomes
After the course, student will be able to:
- describe the key issues of current trends in the bone and antler production research
- define and summarize important features of the development of bone and antler production in time and space
