Course objectives
The course follows the history of the English language from the earliest stages of Indo-European, Primitive Germanic and West Germanic, via the Old, Middle, and New English periods to Modern English. The phonological, grammatical, and lexical developments are discussed in their mutual relationships. The seminars concentrate on the analysis and transla-tion of Old English, Middle English, and Early New English texts. Recommended literature: Josef Vachek - Historický vývoj angličtiny (8th edition); Josef Hladký - An Old English, Middle English, and Early New English Reader (3rd edition).
