Course objectives
Objectives of the course: The course provides students with a solid understanding of key concepts in semantics. The course aims to encourage an active approach on the part of students toward the subject matter. Students successfully completing the course will be able to identify and explain concepts which are central to the study of communication. They will be able to describe and discuss the semantic structure of lexemes. They will also have an enhanced knowledge of the semantic structure of sentences.
Syllabus
  • Description of the course: The course is taught in English. The topics covered in the course are as follows: - semantics and other linguistic disciplines
  • - seven types of meaning, componential analysis
  • - naming; sense and reference
  • - the word and the sentence
  • - semantic meaning versus pragmatic meaning
  • - proposition, modality, deictics
  • - semantic fields and collocations, idioms
  • - predication, types of predicates
  • - sense relations: hyponymy, synonymy, antonymy, relational opposites, polysemy and homonymy
  • - grammar and the lexicon
  • - components and the sentence
  • - case grammar
  • - sentence types and modality
