Cíle předmětu
The intensive course is an introduction to current cognitive approaches to analyzing meaning in language at all levels, including morphological, lexical, phrasal and sentential. The course will be co-taught by Prof. Laura Janda (Tromsø, Norway), Dr. Wei-lun Lu (Department of Chinese, Masaryk University) and Doc. Naděžda Kudrnáčová (Department of English and American Studies, Masaryk University). Students are required to attend seminar sessions taught by Prof. Janda (Sessions 1-5), Doc. Kudrnáčová (Session 8) and Dr. Lu (Session 9) and the entire conference of Cog Ling in Brno 2016, co-organized by the English Department and the Chinese Department, in order to understand the applications and values of cognitive linguistics (Sessions 6-7). There will be two class meetings (Sessions 11-12) dedicated to student presentations of their class projects. Students are encouraged to set up an appointment with Dr. Lu or Doc. Kudrnáčová to discuss their class project if in any doubt (Session 10).

Metody hodnocení
A class project is required. Students need to present the project orally (20%) and to hand in a final written paper (50%, 10 pages for MA, 5 pages for BA). Students also need to select three sessions from Sessions 1-9 and write a one-page summary of each (30%), preferably including how the three talks might relate to their class project and their own research interest.
