Course objectives

The students will be acquainted with the basic terms in the field of translation and translation studies and with a brief outline of the development of approaches to translation. At the beginning of the course, the importance of competence in the target language will be stressed and a short test in Czech will inform the students of the level of their Czech. The core of the course consists of the translation of various types of texts and the discussion of different translation procedures and techniques. The theoretical basis will be supplied.

Syllabus

Theory: Students study the assigned literature individually, theoretical aspects of tranlsation are then discussed/applied in class in relation to the translated texts.
Practical translating: The core of the course lies in practical translation. Students translate and hand in passages of texts for each lesson, their translations are then discussed in class. Topics and texts for translation are as follows:
Week 1 Course outline, rules, assessment; importance of the target language; introductory test in Czech
Week 2 Informative texts - introductory: "Central England"
Week 3 Informative texts: "Rodents" (a scientific study)
Week 4 En essay from The Economist: "Wimmin are from Mars…"
Week 5 Technical texts (extracts from several texts)
Week 6 An article from the Cosmopolitan: "10 Man Types to Avoid at All Costs"
Week 7 Scholarly text
Week 8 Vocative texts 1 (extracts from several texts)
Week 9 Vocative texts 2: advertisements - a special instance of translation
Week 10 Electronic media; Practical aspects of translation (translation market, contracts, professional guilds, prices etc.)
Week 11 Some examples heard on TV ("Moonlighting") or found in printed translations
Week 12 Expressive/Literary text: "This Place"
