Course objectives
The core of the course lies in translating selected articles from the English version of Wikipedia, the internet encyclopaedia. Its system of registering and storing all subsequent versions of the articles offers the opportunity of collaborative improving and comparing the texts; the products will be immediately available to all users of Wikipedia. The course will further include (a) an introduction to the wiki environment; (b) a discussion of the current discourse on possibilities and limitations of Wikipedia and similar projects; (c) analysis and criticism of some of the existing translated articles and an attempt at drawing conclusions on translations produced by non-professionals (Wikipedia will be used as a special corpus of non-professional texts); (d) verification and improvement of the contents of the articles (as an inseparable element of the process of translation); (e) possibly also translation of some articles from the Czech into the English version of Wikipedia. The course is conceived as a practical workshop; students therefore have to expect relatively large amounts of texts. They will also need to cooperate by means of the internet.
