Course objectives
Description of the course: Theoretical background: What is a corpus? Problems with building a corpus (collecting data, size and representativeness, tagging, desambiguation). Brown Corpus, British National Corpus, Bank of English. Czech National Corpus. Corpus query processors (GCQP, MicroConcord). Parallel corpora (KAČENKA). Learner corpora. Practical application: What is a corpus good for? Using corpora to enhance one's knowledge of English (Data-Driven Learning, Computer-Assisted Language Learning). Using corpora for translating. Using (parallel) corpora for contrastive language studies. Basic typographical rules. Basic HTML. Assessment: A web presentation of a/n analysis/study in the area of CALL, translation studies or contrastive linguistics.
