- Course objectives
- Objectives of the course: The course provides students with a solid understanding of the semantic structure of English verbs. The course aims to encourage an active approach on the part of students toward the subject matter. Students successfully completing the course will be able to categorize English verbs and to interpret their internal semantic structure. They will also be able to examine the syntactic behaviour of verbs in relation to their semantic properties.
- Syllabus
- Description of the course: This is an investigative seminar, designed for advanced students. The topics covered in the course are as follows: - basic situation types
- - 'telicity' versus 'atelicity'
- - achievements
- - internal semantic structure of English verbs versus their internal temporal structuration
- - semantic multivalence of English verbs
- - modal verbs
- - internal semantic structure of verbs in relation to their syntactic behaviour
- - verbs in middle constructions
- - verbs in passive constructions
- - causative verbs
- - motion verbs
- - verbs versus nouns
- - event structuration as reflected in verbal semantics

- One 1.5 hour seminar, held every other week of the term.
