Course objectives
This course will deal with patterns of language use in written English and Czech. Based on the concept that textual analysis is a perspective which makes ideological structures tangible, the aim is to pinpoint the differences in stylistics of functional varieties of the two languages: the lexis and syntax and last, but not least, the information structure. A knowledge of the differ-ences makes it easier for the translator to find adequate means in the target language. The texts will include examples of scientific and technical English, synopses, administrative style (letters, instructions), legal documents, the language of media, advertising, criticism, religion and the narrative structure of a short narrative.
