They also should know the name of at least one book written by Chomsky. No other knowledge is presupposed.

Metody hodnocení
Two tests: a) the first in midterm to check the progress of technical knowledge (30 points). b) the second and final test at the end of the term to assess the ability to produce coherent argument (40 points). The remaining points can be obtained by active participation in the seminars and the closing colloquium.

Informace učitele
Five main theses of Chomskyan Linguistics: 1) Human language faculty (mental grammar) is part of our biology. Therefore, it can be assumed that people possess it at birth as they possess other mental organs. 2) The initial state of mental grammar is determined, though it is later modified through experience. 3) Mental grammar cannot be described directly but it can be studied through forming and testing hypotheses like other natural objects 4) The simplest assumption is that mental grammar is perfect, i.e. economic, non-redundant, regular. 5) The phenomenon to be explained by linguistics: how can such a system arise in the mind/brain?
