Course objectives
In this course we will examine elements of the grotesque in various twentieth-century American short stories. We will test our analytical skills on such classics of the genre as those by Sherwood Anderson, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Carson McCullers, Bernard Malamud and others. We will discuss how the elements of the grotesque add to the overall artistic vision and try to arrive at a better understanding of the function of the grotesque not only in short stories but in literature in general.
