- Course objectives
- This course will examine the American presence abroad - in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America - as presented in various literary works. How are Americans defined? What are their reasons for going abroad? How are Americans shaped by the different cultures they encounter? How are those cultures conversely shaped by them? These are some of the questions we will attempt to answer by reading and discussing works by such writers as Mark Twain, Henry James, Ernest Hemingway, Graham Greene, and others.
