Course objectives
The goal of the course is to consolidate and enhance students understanding of the concept of style and to develop their perception of style in literary texts in Czech and English to be able to apply these skills in improving their translation skills. We will reflect on and discuss the definitions of the concept of style, the functions of style, stylistic means in Czech and English, simplified concepts of style, the system of expression proposed by Fr. Miko, mocrostylistics and macrostylistics, syntax and punctuation as stylistic elements, focalization, semantic differential, glutination, and other language phenomena involved in construction of style all that in consideration of specific texts and their translations. We will translate and evaluate stylistic shifts in both published and our own translations and use stylistic experiment and modelling.

Assessment methods (in Czech)
Jádro semináře budou představovat společné analýzy a diskuze nad původními texty a doma připravenými překlady jejich úryvků. Domácí příprava a domýšlení problémů předestřených v semináři jsou nutným předpokladem úspěšného absolvování. Hodnocení zohlední: práci v semináři, miniprezentaci stylu vybraného díla v češtině, písemný rozbor stylistického problému a jeho řešení odevzdávaný na závěr semestru.
