Prerequisites
The subject is designed for students with a very good command of the English language who are able to understand scientific texts and lectures dealing with specialized topics in diachronic linguistics. The prerequisite is a good ability of analytical reasoning.

Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to supplement or widen the students' knowledge of the development of the English language from the earliest stages of Indo-European to Modern English. Attention is paid especially to the relationship between changes at the phonological, grammatical, and the lexical levels, and to the cultural, historical, and social factors.
Learning outcomes

The development of English syntax 5. Important events in the history of the English language and culture 6. Important texts in the history of English literature 7. Analysis and translation of selected Old English texts 8. Analysis and translation of selected Middle English texts 9. Analysis and translation of selected New English texts 10. The development of the individual language levels and their mutual relations 11. Cultural factors of the development of language

Teaching methods
The course makes use of the following teaching and learning methods: lecture, interactive in-class exercise (text analysis), out-of class exercise - text analysis and translation, homework - reading study materilas.
Assessment methods
The subject is closed by a test, which takes about two hours. The focus of the test is topics dealt with in seminars. In order to pass the exam, the students have to answer correctly at least 60 % of the questions.
