Course objectives
This course focuses on selected feature films made by major Canadian filmmakers during the last third of the 20th century. Students taking the course will get acquainted with ten key films that in their day represented notable artistic achievements and have remained an integral part of the canon of Canadian cinema ever since. During the course students will learn about various problems Canadian filmmakers are facing when confronted with their mighty Hollywood competition and they will assess the opportunities such a marginal position paradoxically represents. Cutting across a variety of genres, the selected films also invite thinking about a variety of wider contextual aspects. In other words studnets will be lead to understand not only the films as such, but also a variety of social, political and institutional issues that the films result from and reflect. A no less important aim of the course is to provide the course participants with a theoretical framework for a better understanding and appreciation of the film medium.
