Course objectives
One-semester obligatory course for students of the Master Diploma in Translation studies programme, focusing on practical aspects of the translator profession and the tools used when translating, ranging from the traditional ones to the latest developments. Efficient use of the Internet and other sources of information, both factual and linguistic, will also be taught. The teaching, based on teachers'(and translators') experience, acquired both in the Czech Republic and abroad, will point out the necessity of collaboration among translators and use of the latest technology. The course will draw students' attention to some of the translator guilds and provide useful advice and recommendation for the budding freelancer.

  • Introduction - becoming a translator Dictionaries and manuals - books (according to languages) Using a computer, (ELF: Academic Typing) Electronic dictionaries and other resources on CDs Online dictionaries and sources of information Corpora in translation into L2 CNK and other sources (Pravidla českého pravopisu etc.) Sketch engine (examples of why you should use it) Internet for translators - search engines BootCat - terminology mining using texts from the web CAT Tools - overview, comparison Revision and proofreading Collaboration with other translators, organizing your work, mental hygiene
