Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to revise and consolidate what students have already learnt, and to develop and extend their knowledge further. Using a skills-based approach, the course will prepare students for success in general as well as academic English. The course will contain:
- thought-provoking material and engaging topics for discussions and communication activities that will help students to improve their command of spoken English
- video recordings with tasks to enhance students' understanding of the language and their listening skills, presenting up-to-date language in a real-world context
- basics of academic writing, providing students with model answers, useful planning techniques and writing tasks graded in terms of difficulty
- vocabulary development activities, with a strong focus on academic vocabulary, critical thinking and techniques designed to improve students´ academic performance
- presenting and practice of advanced grammatical structures
Students will be encouraged to improve their English both in contact classes and independently in the self-access online mode.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to:
- actively use vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and collocations of the set topics;
- master understanding of complex grammar structures and apply them in spoken and written discourse;
- apply acquired language systems and skills adequately in a given communicative context
Syllabus
  • Skillful 4: Reading and Writing (Units 1-5); Listening and Speaking (Units 1-5)
  • 1 ORIENTACE - úvodní setkání celého ročníku
  • 2 Úvodní hodina jednotlivých seminárních skupin:
  • seznamování, představení e-learningového kurzu v Elfu, sylabus, cíle a požadavky v rámci kurzu
  • UNIT 1; Diskuse, slovní zásoba, porozumění čtenému textu (A Lebanese start-up)
  • 3 UNIT 1; Soustředěné čtení s porozuměním (The rise of crowdfunding); tématická slovní zásoba (Social media); porozumění slyšenému (Drones and security); akademická slovní zásoba
  • 4 UNIT 1; Gramatika (concessive clauses - přípustkové věty, contrastive structures - vyjádření kontrastu, cleft sentences - vytýkací vazba); psaní (analýza otázek zadání); pokročilá obecná a akademická slovní zásoba (Communities in real life)
  • 5 UNIT 2; Nácvik diskuse (Mobile gaming); obecná slovní zásoba (Instant satisfaction); poslech s porozuměním (A cycling record; Technology in sport)
  • 6 UNIT 2; Čtení s porozuměním, diskuse (Gaming, society, and the individual); pokročilé gramatické jevy (inverted conditionals - kondicionály + inverze); porozumění slyšenému (Children, sports, and identity); pokročilá obecná a akademická slovní zásoba
  • 7 Opakování Units 1 a 2; další procvičování / Postupový test 1
  • 8 UNIT 3; Pokročilá obecná slovní zásoba (Energy production; Managing change); diskuse a porozumění slyšenému (Old buildings; New energy); rozvoj kritického myšlení.
  • 9 UNIT 3; Diskuse a porozumění slyšenému (The nuclear debate; Perspectives on the past); rozvoj pokročilé slovní zásoby (Words for change situations); pokročilé gramatické jevy (conditionals - kondicionály)

  • 12 UNIT 5; Diskuse a porozumění slyšenému (Slume renewal); porozumění čtenému textu a rozvoj slovní zásoby (Suburbs of the future); diskuse a porozumění slyšenému (The spread of English); gramatika (inversion - inverze)
  • 13 UNIT 5; Rozvoj akademické slovní zásoby (Phrasal verb academic alternatives - náhrada frázových sloves alternativami vhodnými do akademického textu); pokročilé gramatické jevy (Using parallel structures - paralelní vazby); porozumění slyšenému a rozvoj slovní zásoby (An unnatural spread).

Assessment methods
Assessment:
- 2 computer-based progress tests, 1 mid-term test and 1 final test, with the required average score of 70%. Passing these tests is a prerequisite for the final examination.

The progress tests (2 in each term, 70% overall) are a prerequisite for the examination at the end of the first year. Students can resit one test each term.
