Cíle předmětu
The course is one of three considering elements of later nineteenth and earlier twentieth century British and sometimes European literature with aim of providing a thorough consideration of the social and aesthetic developments and perspectives occuring in this period. The courses are independent of one another and it is not necessary to have taken either of the other two in order to take this one. Writers whose work is considered on this course include: Arnold Bennett, Ford Madox Ford, Edmund Gosse, E.M. Forster, George Gissing, Thomas Hardy, Henry James, James Joyce, D.H Lawrence, Dorothy Richardson, and Virginia Woolf.
Výstupy z učení
Students completing the course will have gained a better understanding of the issues and perspectives occurring in the period as well as of the transition from late Victorian to early Modernist aesthetics.

Výukové metody
Teaching will take the form of close reading, míní-group and full class discussion.
Metody hodnocení
Assessment will be by attendance (25%) oral contribution (25%), and an essay of 7-10 pages (50%). Essays should be submitted to my e-mail address in the IS (33697@muni.cz) and nowhere else. If you have not received a grade after 3 days please let me know.
