Course objectives
At the end of the course, students will be able to critically evaluate the canonical, stylistic, socio-cultural, and other issues surrounding a writer such as H.P. Lovecraft, discuss the writings of others with sensitivity and appreciation, and have a greater understanding of the contexts of early Horror and Supernatural Fiction.
Syllabus
  • Week 1. Introduction to central themes: Read HPL “In the Mountains of Madness”. Week 2. Weird regions / the unnatural wilderness: Read HPL “Dagon”, HPL “The Colour out of Space”, and Karl Edward Wagner “Sticks”. Week 3. Weird regions / the (un)natural wilderness: Watch The Blair Witch Project (1999) and Annihilation (2018). Week 4. Weird regions / weird settlements: Read HPL “The Shadow over Innsmouth”; watch In The Mouth of Madness (1994). Week 5. Weird artistry: Read HPL “The Haunter of the Dark”; watch Pickman’s Muse (2010). Week 6. Weird discoveries: Read HPL “The Call of Cthulhu”, HPL and Hazel Heald “Out of the Aeons”. Week 7. The undimensioned and unseen: Read HPL “The Dunwich Horror”, HPL “The Hound”, and HPL “The Unnamable”; watch Birdbox (2018). Week 8. Aligning the dimensions: Read HPL “From Beyond”; watch From Beyond (1986) and Banshee Chapter (2013). Week 9. Entering the dimensions: Read HPL “The Dreams in the Witch House”; watch The Void (2016) and Event Horizon (1997). Week 10. The hidden occult: Read HPL “The Festival”; watch The Ritual (2017) and The Shrine (2010). Week 11. The ruins of the occult: Read HPL “The Rats in the Walls” and Stephen King “Jerusalem’s Lot”. Week 12. Parentages: Read E.A. Poe “The Tell-Tale Heart”, Ambrose Bierce “The Inhabitant of Carcosa”, and Robert W. Chambers “The Repairer of Reputations” and “The Yellow Sign”. Week 13. Homages: Watch In Search of Lovecraft (2008) and The Whisperer in Darkness (2011).
Teaching methods
Seminars, 1½ hours per week.
Assessment methods
For credit, students will be expected to write an essay (10 pages, typed, double-spaced). It should have a well-crafted thesis, should be scholarly in tone, and should endeavor to support all claims textually through the materials engaged during this course. Final grades will be divided in the following proportion: 20% for attendance and class participation; 80% for the essay.
