Course objectives
This course builds up on the course entitled Teaching practice 2. Students spend another two weeks in a selected secondary school (preferably of a different type) to develop professionally. Students spend two weeks in a selected secondary schools to develop professionally. Students will observe their mentor and their peers, prepare and teach EFL lessons on their own and with their peers, take part in reflective and feedback sessions, shadow their mentor in everyday school activities. Students compile a portfolio for future reference, which will be worked with at the final State exam.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to: 1. Prepare suitable plans for English language lessons in line with the focus of the course and school (e.g. General English, the culture and literature of English-speaking countries, inter-cultural communication, ESP) 2. Select, adapt and supplement material appropriate to the student needs and institutional settings and teach a class with an awareness of different student needs and learning preferences. 3. Teach and team-teach language lessons demonstrating effective execution of their planning and adjusting their teaching appropriately to actual circumstances of teaching English in upper-secondary classrooms. 4. Analyse and reflect on their own teaching, classroom planning and practice and give and receive constructive feedback. 5. Manage everyday tasks of a secondary school teacher, for example, filling in a class register. 6. Compare the two different school placement situations (i.e. External teaching practice 1 & 2). 7. Administer and correct a written assignment.
Syllabus
  • 1. Planning and teaching lessons in pairs (team teaching) and independently (of which at least 5 will be consecutive ones with one class) 2. Preparation of lessons that will guide the students to submit written assignments (e.g. essays, letters), grading, analysis and evaluation of the products (to be administered in the class where the student taught at least 5 consecutive classes) 3. Classroom observation 4. Teaching analysis, feedback and self-reflection 5. Shadowing their mentor in everyday school-related tasks and trying out activities, such as filling in a class register, marking progress tests, etc. 6. Completing tasks before, during and after the teaching practice

Teaching methods
Students teach under the supervision of mentors, complete observation tasks, take part in everyday secondary school activities
Assessment methods
In order to get credits for this course, the students need to teach the required number of EFL lessons in a selected secondary school, observe their mentors and peers, and compile and submit a portfolio of all documents, tasks, personal reflections and mentor reports. Portfolio tasks include: analysis of School Educational Programme, textbook analysis, analysis of the writing assignment, a comparative essay detailing the differences in the two distinct school placement situations (i.e. Teaching Practice 2 and 3) and a reflective essay related to further professional development.
