Course objectives
The aim of this course is to allow students to reflect, share and discuss key issues from their Teaching practice 2 and 3 experience with other students. Run parallel with Teaching practice 2 and 3, the topics covered in this course will directly correspond to the areas related to teaching English at upper secondary school which the students deal with during their teaching practice.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to: 1. Analyse, evaluate and reflect on their classroom practice and identify key areas for improvement in their teaching. 2. Analyse, evaluate and reflect on their knowledge of school policy and working life in an upper secondary school including institutional aspects of planning and teaching, and communication with colleagues and parents. 3. Discuss the relevance of classroom research and possibilities of further professional development.
Syllabus
  • 1. Everyday life of an English language teacher in a Czech upper secondary school. 2. Institutional aspects of planning and teaching. 3. Testing, assessment and evaluation in upper-secondary education. The washback effects of the Maturita examination. 4. Focus on the learners with special needs in upper-secondary education. Assessment, diagnosis, individual plans, possibilities of meeting the diverse needs of the learners. Working with gifted learners. 5. Teaching and analysing a series of lessons in upper-secondary settings, including selecting and adapting material. 6. Maintaining positive relationships and communicating with colleagues and parents. 7. Possibilities of further professional development.

Teaching methods
Discussion, pair and group work, practical demonstrations, reading.
Assessment methods
In order to get the credits for this course students must attend all of the classes and submit a reflective essay on 3 areas from working life as an upper secondary English teacher that they found interesting, and an action plan for their further professional development.
