Course objectives
The course aims to provide students with an overview of the development of archival science as an academic discipline in the context of the development of written culture, with an emphasis on the origins and transformation of archives as professional institutions in the period between the 19th and 21st centuries.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- identify the main developmental trends in archival science, with an emphasis on the modern period and contemporary history;
- describe the principles of changes in the methodological framework of archival theory within the historical context;
- explain the forms of institutional development of archives in the Czech lands.
Syllabus
  • 1. Written culture of the Middle Ages as the beginning of the creation of European archives.
  • 2. Archives and their development in the early modern period.
  • 3. Archives and archival science in the period of the development of modern sciences.
  • 4. The care of archival materials in the Czech lands in the 19th century.
  • 5. Czech and Moravian archives during the changes of the 20th century.

Oral Exam The prerequisite for admission to the examination is the preparation of a paper on the content of a specified article on the topic of the course no later than the end of the autumn semester.
