Course objectives
This series of seminars aims is aimed at equipping graduates with the practical ability to work with autographs of distinguished figures, most of whom were prominent in Bohemia and Moravia from around the period of the National Revival to the present day. Particular attention will be paid to literary figures (writers, poets), historians, composers and other public figures (such as politicians). A subject of interest will also be the role of autographs in the genesis of a literary work in its progression from an archetype to a printed (published) version.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- read difficult manuscript texts, including concepts and first drafts of literary works;
- identify the individual scribal hand for sources written in neo-Gothic and humanistic script;
- to compare a hand-written and printed text of the same work, to draw from it textual conclusions important in preparing a critical edition for determining the archetype;
- understand the genesis of a literary work from the origin of the concept, to the author’s manuscript, through to its final printed form (or reprint);
- uncover evidence of censorship in the manuscripts of authors;
- work with modern period manuscripts from the 18th to 20th century.
