Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to compose basic techniques. Students will be acquainted with the specificities of vocal and instrumental polyphonies in the renaissance and baroque music. Basic techniques: imitation, proportion, modality etc. Basic forms: canon, motet, madrigal, passacaglia, fugue etc.

Syllabus
  • Introduction to counterpoint: basic terminology
  • Prerequisites: intervals and modes - their classification
  • Techniques of the cantus firmus: 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 3:1, 6:1 and syncopic counterpoint
  • Imitation techniques: typology
  • Contrapuntal figures
  • Instrumental techniques: free and reversed counterpoint
  • Fugue - analysis and exemplification of the techniques
