- Course objectives
- The course is focused on textual recherches, the relevance of selection (in terms of context, genre, motive, topic etc.) and translation of Baltic Finnic epics. At the end of the course students should be able to work with folklore text corpora; and be more familiar with minority Baltic Finnic languages.
- Syllabus
- The course is intended as a seminar. The teacher introduces particular textual sources, representative texts, possible archetypes and variants, and auxiliary tools like folklore methodology, descriptive grammars and dictionaries. Subsequently the students under the teacher's supervision compile a set of text, selected according to a language, geographic, genre, thematic or motivic criteria, translate the texts and comment them.
