Course objectives
Upon completion, the student will consciously understand how to approach the creation of translation. He will be able to analyze the translated text from a translation point of view and evaluate the choice of specific translation strategies and intentions to create an adequate translation from the source to the target language.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: • evaluate how a particular text is translated; • choose appropriate translation procedures and strategies; • critically evaluate the adequacy of the translation.
Syllabus
  • • Approaches to translation, their theories, and history: from ancient times, literary aesthetic approach, linguistic approach (functional approach, contrastive view, context theory, linguistic determinism, transformation grammar, component analysis, dynamic equivalence, pragmatic approach, communicative translation x semantic translation, complex semantic-stylistic-pragmatic view, holistic principle, textual linguistics, and the latest tendencies. • Types of translation: goal - naturalness, the identity of meaning, maintaining dynamics; interlanguage, intersemiotic, interlanguage translation; interlinear, literal, loose, communicative translation. • Translation process: macro approach, micro-view; register: field, tenor, mode; cultural transposition: exoticism, cultural transplantation, cultural borrowing, calc, communicative translation, etc. • Translation procedures: transcription, calc, substitution, transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation; amplification, explicitation, omission, compensation, etc. • Translation and lexical and grammatical level: complete and partial counterparts - formal differences, denotative / connotation / pragmatic meanings, morphological plan, syntax. • Types of texts and approach to them: administrative, style of science and technology, journalistic, artistic, style of official documents. • Critique and analysis of translation: descriptive method, semantic interpretation, confrontational stylistics, pragmatic aspect; part of the translation process x evaluation of translation quality; evaluation criteria: the result of the translation process, text in the target language, intercultural communication, transformation of the source text, interlanguage communication; equivalence: semantic, pragmatic, textual; analysis of examples: 1) based on TT (logic, language norm), 2) analysis of ST in terms of system differences, 3) comparative analysis of ST and TT (obvious errors, hidden errors), 4) analysis of culturally specific elements; translation through another language, used translation methods and concepts, errors of meaning. • Artificial intelligence: translators, corpora, Wikipedia, dictionaries, etc.
