Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to understand and explain the main issues of the history of the Baltic region in the context of the European Middle Ages.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student should be able to: - describe the trends of historical development in eastern Baltics in the Middle Ages; - describe the ethnic genesis of Baltic nations, the formation of states and estate society in Eastern Baltics; - describe more important historical sources which are relevant for the study of medieval Baltic societies; - describe the historical development in the Baltic region in the context of Medieval Europe and identify the specific features of the development in Eastern Baltics.

Spojení Litvy s Polskem a Kalmarská unie. 11) Náboženská, sociální a politická diferenciace společnosti v 12) Počátek a šíření reformace církve v Prusku, Livonsku a ve Finsku. Úpadek a sekularizace řádových států. Finská společnost v 16. st. 1) Baltic and Fennougric nations out of Christian Europe (until the 10th century). The first notes on the Baltic nations in the sources of Ancient and Medieval Europe 2) Christian Europe until the 10th century: East–West and South-North opposition.The Pope and the Holy Roman Empire. 3) Europe and the Mediterranean in the 11th-13th centuries: Knight orders. 4)The North Europe in the 9th-11th centuries: Expansion of the Vikings. The Dannish Kingdom and the archbishopric of Hamburg Bremen. Hansa. 5) Central Europe in the 10th and 11th centuries: Origins of Czech, Polish and Hungarian states. 6) The East Baltic Regions (from Prussia to Finland) in the 10th-13th centuries: Infiltration of Christianity. 7) Territories of the Orders in Prussia and Livonia. Rise of the Lithuanian state. 8) Great political projects in the 14th century. Lithuanian-Polish and Kalmar Unions. 9) The development of the estate society in medieval Poland and Lithuania after the adoption of Christianity. 10) The rise of Moscow. Florence Union and the fall of Constatntinopolis. The political situation in East-Central and Northern Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. 11) Religious, social and political diversity in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 16th century. Conflicts and compromises. Lublin Union. 12) The spread of Reformation in Eastern Baltics. The fall and secularisation of the order states. The Finnish society in the 16th century.

Teaching methods
Lectures, class discussion, presentation of papers, reading.
Assessment methods
The presentation of the paper according to prescribed literature (max 5 points), participation in discussions (max. 5 points), and final written examination (max 5 points). Students should collect at least 12 points for gaining credit.
