Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain main issues of the modern history of Lithuania and Poland (from the 17th century to the 20th century).
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student should be able to: - identify the main periods of political and social development of Poland and Lithuania in 1569-1940; - describe the trends of political, social and cultural development of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Polish-Lithuanian lands under the rule of the Russian, Prussian and Austrian Empires, and the republics between the world wars; - describe the specific features of the historical development on the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and differences in their historical interpretation; - describe the political and social factors, which formed modern nations and modern republics in Polish and Lithuanian lands.

The obstructions to the military and administration reforms 11.10. The social and economic failure of the republican system. Social and economic background of clientele system and the informal structure of power. The consolidation of feudalism and the economic decline. 18.10. The multicultural society. Religious tolerance and conflicts. The struggle in schooling. 25.10. The Enlightenment Reforms. The Partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. 01.11. The politics of Russia and Prussia in the partitioned lands of Poland and Lithuania. Their influence on the formation of the modern nations. 08.11. The models of "National awakening". The traditions of the revolution and the organic work in the Polish and Lithuanian national movements. 22.11. The fall of the estates society. The ways and difficulties in social integration. The social structure of national movements. 29.11. The challenges of nationalism to multi-cultural societies. Antisemitism. The programs of political parties in the wake of World War I. 06.12. Teaching methods
Lectures, class discussion, homeworks, reading.
Assessment methods
Students choose between methods of examination mentioned below:
1) Written report on the given topic and it's oral presentation at the class-discussion (max 5 pts.). PLUS final written exam: students are given 3 questions and choose 1 to answer to (max 5 pts.). PLUS active participation at class-discussions (max 5 pts.).
The positive final evaluation presupposes student has min 12 pts. after final examination.
