Course objectives
If students write a seminar paper, their B.A. or M.A. thesis and are not sure about rules of Czech punctuation, orthography etc., they can choose this optional course. The level of acquiring these skills, even in the field of humanities, seems to be decreasing during the last years, but it is useful to bear in mind that the influence of each text is linked with the degree of its cultivation, including the level of orthography. This course is focused exactly on these issues, i.e. on specific features of written texts, with a particular regard to orthgraphy, its present state and tendencies within the system. The course will deal with rules of writing Czech words, loan-words, capitalization, abbreviations, punctuation, hyphenation, as well as with morphological and syntactic issues reflected by orthohgraphy. Information about the most important books on these issues will also be included, as well as possibilities of solving problems which are not dealt with in them. The particular topics will always be linked with practical exercises and later with a practical analysis of shorter texts.
