Course objectives
The series of lectures is focused on position of lexicology in relation to other linguistic disciplines as well as to logic, philosophy and cognitive psychology. The aim is to get the students acquainted with the history and present-day state of exploring words, with the plurality of lexicological theories and to support their ability to develop their own opinions. In correlation with the seminars, the focus is on lexical semantics – on the structure of lexical meaning, possibilities of its description, cognitive aspects of semantics etc. Final lectures are devoted to the history of Czech lexicography and - time permitting - to the introduction to onomastics.
Syllabus
  • The course deals with the following wider topics:
  • 1) History of research about words, various approaches, traditions of Czech lexicology
  • 2) Selected theories of meaning in language and their extra-linguistic starting points (Aristoteles, Frege, Wittgenstein).
  • 3) Lexical meaning – its inner structure and possibilities of description
  • 4) Semantic vagueness
  • 5) Selected topics from cognitive linguistics (theory of prototypes, metaphors in thinking and in language).
  • 6) An outline of the development of Czech lexicography with the focus on explanatory lexicography.
  • 7) Introduction to onomastics
