Course objectives
The course wants to demonstrate the way of perceiving the alegorie and symbol, which is reflected in the literature of different cultural periods, the Middle Ages, the Humanism and Baroque. On the basis of analyses of the old-Czech-literature texts (classical as well as less known texts, e.g. the Ivancice and Roh's Hymnals made by the Czech Bretheren) the course is going to identify the specific features of the symbolism of each period and their common, timeless signs.
Syllabus
  • The course consists of two parts. In the first one we'll define the terms Alegorie and Symbol as they are viewed in Scholarly literature (e.g.E. Petru, A. Stich, J. Lehár, L. Cejp, V. Cerný, F. G. Curtius, J. le Goff), their understanding in each epoch, also the biblical symbolism as a foundation of the later world perception. The second part of the seminar will be devoted to text analysis.
