Course objectives
The course argues that Czech emigré literature can be defined thematically as such texts which record the main characters process of psychological adaptation to life outside the Czech environment. Thus these literary texts anticipated globalisation. The course will analyse a series of literary works which fall within this definition. At the end, it will provide information about some of the Czech emigré journals. The structure of the course: 1. Introduction, emigré publishing houses, emigré literature: a definition 2. Jaroslav Hutka, Požár v bazaru, Vilém Hejl, Zásada sporu 3. Vladimír Škutina, Prezidentův vězeň na hradě plném bláznů, Ferdinand Peroutka, Oblak a valčík, Pozdější život Panny 4. Sylvie Richterová, Návraty a jiné ztráty, Místopis 5. Jan Křesadlo, Mrchopěvci, Fuga trium Vara guru 6. Jaroslav Vejvoda, Plující andělé, letící ryby, Ptáci Jan Drábek, A co Václav 7. Jan Novák, Striptease Chicago, Stanislav Moc, Údolí nočních papoušků 8. Emigré periodicals: Svědectví 9. Emigré periodicals: Proměny 10. Emigré periodicals: Obrys, Západ The students will send the essay to the lecturer by email. They will also receive the lecturer's comments and evaluation by email from the United Kingdom.
Syllabus
  • The seminars will be devoted to the analysis of the individual literary texts. Each seminar will take a short student presentation (not more than 15 minutes) as a point of departure.

Zápočet se bude udílet na základě písemného eseje v rozsahu cca 2000 slov (6-7 normostran).
