Prerequisites
Czech and German Knightly Epic General survey of the history of Czech literature from the beginning to the 18th century. Passive knowledge of German (grammar school level).

Course objectives
The content of this seminar is an analysis of selected groups of motives in Czech and German knightly epic. Comparative look at both groups will enable the students to evaluate them fully and more objectively.

  • 1. - 3. literary, historical and cultural context; survey of Czech and German knightly epic with regard to the development in the 13th century 4. - 5. Courtesy in Czech and German knightly epic 6. - 7. the issue of topical motives in Czech and German knightly epic 8. - 9. Arthurian cycle of poems in Czech and German medieval epic 10. - 12. the interpretation of selected passages in Czech and German knightly epic
