The course is ment primarily for students, who have already taken the course Old Czech Literatureand already have some experience reading old czech texts.

Course objectives
The course concentrates on the analysis of Old Czech texts, where the allegory aspect plays a significant role.We will deal with the function of allegory in Old Literature and the connection between the allegory form and the esthetic value of a work. The seminar wants to capture the developement of allegory, emphasis will be put on the role of alegory in medieval esthetics and the change of the allegorical perception of the world in later periods. Selected czech texts will be compared to works of European literature.

Allegory as a tool of political ideology 6. Allegory and its place in the Reformation and Antireformation period 7. Theatrum mundi 8. The world as a labyrinth 9. The allegory in folk Baroque Literature 10. The text and image- the allegorical tools in luboks, leaflets and cartoons of the 18th and 19th centuries 11. Allegory and its role in the Literature of the 20th century
